Which software wallets can I use with my Ledger devices?

How can I back up my Ledger devices?

The 24 words you recorded when you first configured your device is your back up. These 24 words are your wallet 'seed' - it is like a passphrase that generates all your public and private addresses.

If you are using two Ledger devices and want to import your crypto asset accounts, you need to enter these 24 words in the new wallet, and it will automatically synchronise all your transactions from the blockchain and display balances.

Are my coins stored on my Ledger?

Your coins are not stored on the device itself, they are tracked on the Blockchain. Your Ledger hardware holds and protects the private data used to access and manage them. This data (private keys) is the certificate of the ownership of your coins: it gives the full access to these coins.

The 24 words you copied on your Recovery Sheet when you initialized your device, are paramount: they are the backup passphrase to import the access data to any wallet, they give the full access to your coins.

Without these 24 words and without your PIN code, no one can access your wallet, even if your Ledger device gets stolen. Your secrets are securely stored inside the Secure Element of your device, your coins are safe.

Can I reset my Ledger and give it to someone else?

Yes. You can reset the Ledger by entering the wrong pin code three times. When the next person re-configures the device it will generate a brand new 24 word Recovery Seed.

Does my Ledger have to be connected when I receive coins?

Your coins are not on the device itself, they are tracked on the Blockchain. Your Ledger device holds and protects the private data useful to access and manage them. These data (private keys) are the certificate of ownership of your coins: they give full access to these coins.

When you want to receive coins, you just have to provide your address to the payer. Your Ledger device doesn't need to be connected as the transaction is made on the blockchain, not on the device itself. Next time you connect your wallet, it will synchronise to the blockchain to display all your past operations and your balance.

Is the memory on my devices limited?

Yes. All devices have limited memory. The Ledger Nano S can hold four to five apps at a time depending on which apps. The Ledger Blue can hold eight to ten apps. But you can manage more applications, and store a greater variety of coins by installing the app to transfer coins, and then uninstalling it afterwards. Uninstalling an app won't erase your wallet and the coins previously stored.
